As anyone with children knows, it’s practically impossible to find a babysitter on New Year’s Eve, and strangely enough, no one wants a screaming baby or a potty-training toddler at their party, so we have pretty much stayed home for the last 10 years. Sometimes we are invited to and do attend kid-friendly parties, but we usually have had to leave prior to the big ball drop, we get the kids home and in bed, and Dave and I will cuddle up and watch a movie until midnight. If we both stay awake.
This year we decided to try something different and went to a Hershey Bears hockey game with some friends. We sat in the last row of the nosebleed section, and by some quick thinking chance of fate, the children were all seated at the end of the row with the husbands seated between them and us moms as a buffer. We love our children, people, but it was nice not to be the go-to person for drink/potty requests and sibling mediation.
The children + Husbands
= Happy Moms.
Unfortunately, the Bears lost and there was only one fight! Not that fighting is okay, but it’s what the kids most hope to see. (I kind of enjoy it myself). We got sodas and soft pretzels to help make up for the lack of fighting, so everyone was mostly happy.
We saw some friends!
They look close to us, but were seated way way way way way closer to the rink, my zoom was zoomed all the way out!
Then we all headed to our homes. We snacked on ice cream and Cheetos and the big kids watched Percy Jackson and the Olympiads while Dave watched football and Jack and I watched Max and Ruby. By 10:00, Jack was fading fast so we drank our toast (the kids had sparkling grape juice) and counted down to 1 and sent our baby to bed.
At midnight we drank another toast and had our real midnight kiss, Maddie went outside and banged pots, Ben went outside and wiggled a noisemaker around until it flew into the bushes by mistake, and I was enjoying it all so much, I didn’t think to get a photo. So too bad for you, but I’ve got a good mental picture of them out there that wasn’t marred by my attempt to capture a real picture!
Happy New Year to you and yours!

That sounds like a wonderful way to bring in the New Year! Happy 2011!
Alina and Courtney were there w/ Skip- Skip bought raffle tickets for the very first time and won the goalie jersey!!! It's huge! He was so excited just like a kid...wait a minute, he still is one! Happy New Year!
Sounds like a good time to me. We ate a spaghetti dinner then all curled up and made Jemma watch Holiday Inn for the first time! She loved it! At 10:30 we headed over to a neighbors where we all had our kids. We watched the ball drop and then dance to the Wii Just Dance 2 until 3 am!!! Jemma looked at us and said, "I am going home and going to bed!" This was of course after she "walked like an Egyptian"! Happy New Year!!!
Beth - Ellie shared your blog with me - what a pleasure to read!
Anyway - check out the 2 cool guys sitting in front of me. Really- they were in their mid 20s - one is a puck head and the other a bear head - they were so proud when they came back from the store with their purchases. They were actually cute and normal looking. Greg is sure they did not get too lucky on New Year's Eve!
Happy New Years!
